Jello, l large package of lime flavor
Jello, 1 large package of peach or watermelon flavor
1 can NONFAT evaporated milk
water
measuring cup
2 large bowls
1 VERY large bowl
brain mold
cooking oil or non-stick kitchen coating spray
Set the brain mold upside down in its stand and spray with non-stick kitchen spray, or pour some cooking oil into it, swirl around, and pour it off and discard. (It doesn't matter if the mold ends up very oily; most of this will later rise to the top.) Make the two packages of Jello separately, following the directions on the package, boiling water and all, except use a cup less water in each recipe. Let the two batches of Jello cool in the two large bowls for half an hour or so. Then, while stirring, add the can of nonfat evaporated milk to one of the Jello bowls, and pour this mixture into the VERY large bowl. After this is done and all stirred in, begin to add the other flavor of Jello to the very large bowl, while stirring constantly. When the brain looks nicely flesh-colored to you, stop adding the other flavor. Pour the contents of the very large bowl into the brain mold, and refrigerate overnight. To unmold, jiggle the whole thing wildly until you hear the brain flopping back and forth, then upend it onto a plate, and there you are! (If it STILL will not unmold, partly immerse the mold in a bowl of warm water for a few seconds and try again.) To make blood sauce as pictured, click the How to Make Blood button on the bottom of the How to Haunt Page. A supplier of good brain molds is listed on the Sources Page, reached by a button at the bottom of Darksite Home and of How to Haunt. You can even buy small brain molds for individual brains (for your small-minded guests). Do use NONFAT evaporated milk, or it won't work!
More! Clear brains are fun, too. Mix grape and blueberry Jello, or grape and cherry Jello (leaving out the evaporated milk) for a near-black brain that looks vampilicious with blood sauce. A mix of cherry and lime produces a strange grayish color, very appetizing. Rich tan caramel sauce looks good on a lime-green brain. Orange brains are quite Halloweenish, and chocolate sauce dresses them beautifully, a good idea for an October birthday party. Gummy worms add an incomparable finishing touch.
Get creative! Remember, the universe is yours! For example, try grape Jello and nonfat evaporated milk for a sweet pastel lavender brain that could be the bridal shower centerpiece of a lifetime! (Think of it served in a ring of flowers with soft whipped cream on the side. No one will ever say that YOUR parties are boring!)
