Flat Owl was a Shoshoni who died one long, white winter when the deer fled slack-bellied through the drifting snow and the slitted eyes of wolves ringed Flat Owl's fire. Here he lies on his burial platform open to the sky. His weapons, blanket, gourds of food, and trophies of the hunt lie with him. Soon he will begin the long, black journey to the Sky Hunting Ground.
